Feeding Your Cat the Correct Food
When it comes to feeding you cat, you may think all you need to do is grab any bag of dry cat food or a few cans of wet cat food from the shops. However, there’s much more to it than that. In fact, if you buy the wrong kind of food for your cat, you may actually cause him or her some health issues.
First of all, it should go without saying that feeding cat’s human food is not a good idea. You shouldn’t feed any pet from the table, especially since some foods are dangerous to animals. Cats have a different metabolism than humans, so many foods that we enjoy cannot be broken down by their bodies. This includes chocolate and anything with caffeine in it (it can actually be toxic to cats), anything with small bones in it (like fish and chicken), raw eggs and fish, and baby food. There are a few other foods that you may be surprised to find on the list of things not to feed your cat. A large amount of canned tuna can actually be bad for cats since it does not contain that many vitamins and minerals. Also, milk can actually be bad for older cats because their bodies can’t properly break down the lactose.
Now, what about food that is meant for cats? Well, you need to be certain you purchase the right kind of cat food. Cat foods aimed at kittens, for example, should not be fed to adult cats. Kitten food contains extra vitamins and minerals that growing kittens’ need, but when consumed by adult cats, kitten food often simply makes them overweight. You should also take care to feed your adult cats, especially those in their teens, adult cat food. This food is designed to give them minerals that help their aging joints and muscles. While it’s certainly not necessary (you can feed them regular cat food if you want), it does help reduce the many aches and pains your cat may feel as he or she ages.
It’s also important to not feed healthy cats food meant for unhealthy cats. A high protein diet may be helpful for cats that are diabetic, but feeding the same food to cats that aren’t diabetic may cause renal failure or other problems. It may be difficult to separate your cats at dinner time, but it’s important to do so to keep them healthy.
Feeding your cat good quality cat food is also important. Some generic cat food brands or shop brands aren’t as good for them as other brands are. That’s because these name brands have often been tested or specially developed while generic brands have not been. While generic brands are cheaper, they simply aren’t as good for your cats.
Always keep your pet in mind when you’re shopping for cat food. While it might cost a bit more, buying your cat brand name food or special food will only keep him or her healthy. Also, no matter how tempted, don’t give in and let your cat eat your leftovers or other human foods. While it may seem like a treat, it’s not, and it could even be dangerous.
