Pet Food – Why Choosing the Right Food for your Pet is Important
Too often people get a pet and think they can simply put down whatever food they come across. After all, if the bag of pet food comes from the shop it must be good for the animal, right? Well, this could be a wrong assumption as different pet foods will affect your animal in various ways. You will want to make sure that your animals have the very best pet food for them, and when you are trying to establish what will work best for your pet, there are some important things to consider.
One of the first things you will want to think about when buying pet food are the ingredients. You may not realise it but even pet foods have a list of ingredients on the side of the tin so that you can find out what it is that you are feeding your pets. Many of the cheaper pet food products for dogs and cats do not rely on meat by-products, but rather use bone meal as a type of protein replacement – this results in a lesser quality food. You should make sure that some type of actual meat product is in the first three ingredients listed.
Also, while those bright red and colourful bits of pet food might look like raw meat and might seem enticing to you, the fact is this red colouring can cause a lot of problems with intestinal upset in many animals. Plus, your pet is not concerned with the way its food looks, so the dye is really for the owner’s benefit. The body of an animal is not equipped to handle the type of artificial preservatives and ingredients that go into the process of creating these dyed food parts. Many times animals that have problems with this kind of pet food will have noticeable problems with red tinted diarrhoea. If you notice this occurring in your pet and are concerned, one of the first things you should try to do is to remove the food and replace it with something more naturally flavoured and coloured.
All too often, pet owners like to try and feed their pets food that humans would find enjoyable. The problem with this is that your pet’s bodies are not built to handle these kinds of processed foods, so not sticking with a good pet food diet can lead to obesity in your pet. Like people, pets can develop diabetes, heart disease, kidney, and liver problems from being overweight. A secondary problem is that pets can also develop skin problems from food allergies, so if they are not eating a good quality pet food they could also have skin difficulties.
These guidelines are intended for any pet, not just cats and dogs. You may have questions or concerns about what pet food you should give to your hamster, fish, parrot, or guinea pig. While there is no straightforward right answer, the best you can do is sort through the mess and try and use simple guidelines as a way of determining what will work best for your pet.
